Breed Overview Information :Originating from Madagascar, the Coton de Tulear is easily identified by its soft and fluffy, cottony looking coat that is ideal of this type of dog breed. They are rather rare dog breeds in countries other than Madagascar, but are slowly growing in popularity in different parts of the world.
Breed Character Information :The Coton de Tulear is one of those excellent companion dog breeds. Properly socialized ones have no problems in accepting other animals, even large or small dogs, into their area. Aggressiveness is found more often to males of this breed,another problem for this breed is  over-protectiveness most often found in the presence of females in heat. Neutered males and spayed females are the calmest of them all.
Breed Coat Information :The Coton de Tulear’s coat is unique compared to most dog breeds. He’s coat is cottony and dry textured.It looks more like hair than dog fur. The coat appear to be fluffy and light. It’s very long and full.It requires trimming when they reach maturity. Speacial grooming is also required.

Breed Activity Information : It is a rather versatile dog that can be kept either inside the house or an apartment, and also can spend some time outside. Regular exercise is important to help it stay fit and healthy. Alternative indoor activities include short-range fetching and regular, shorter walks. A puppy can already be exposed to the water for it to enjoy some swimming. It is innate of them to love the water, and even a puppy will take every opportunity that they can get just for them to swim. Coton de Tulears were used to be running alongside the owner’s horse and are able to continue for miles in a light pace. Maybe you can do that with your bicycles.Though it looks like a cute and small dog, it is not a toy dog.
Breed Care Information :For its coat to be always at its best, daily grooming should be done. It’s important to keep them from forming mats and knots. They typically do not shed a lot, but they usually have dead hairs that need to be removed at once or else it may cause skin irritations and more mats and tangles.Because it is one of those rare dog breeds, breeders pay close attention in selecting the best breeding programs to ensure production of desirable purebreds. They have no known health problems, but should complete a blood chemistry and general health test that checks for diseases such as the cherry eye, progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation, canine hip dysplasia and Legg Calve Perthes Disease.
Breed Training Information :Training can prove to be a very experience for breeders, though they may seem to be a bit stubborn at times. They are also very responsive to positive training methods that make use of praise and small rewards. This breed is very fast learning about good and bad habits. When in trouble, you may find them doing some cute and endearing things. It’s a breed that can learn quite quick how to walk in their hind legs,and beg.This is what makes it a perfect puppy  and dog for families.
These dogs seem to have a special ability to understand what their owners want even before giving out commands. It’s important that the training must be done as a puppy ,and provide socialization,so he can undestand the basic commands.
